ANERELA+

African Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV & AIDS

Rev. Christo Greyling appointed as new ANERELA+ Chairperson

During the AGM for ANERELA+ which was held in Nairobi, Kenya on 15 June 2007 Christo Greyling was elected as the new Chairperson for ANERELA+.  Rev. Greyling had served ANERELA+ as its Vice-Chairperson for the past 4½ years.  He takes over the reigns from the visionary leader of ANERELA+, Canon Gideon Byamugisha.  Canon Gideon’s desire to see a support structure for religious leaders living with HIV saw the formation of the network in November 2002.  In the most recent AGM Canon Gideon indicated that he would like to find other ways of serving the network now, notably through the strengthening of the National ANERELA+ Boards.

Rev. Greyling first tested HIV+ in 1987 while still a student of theology in Stellenbosch University.  He married his long time sweetheart, Liesel, on his birthday, 3rd April 1988.  Rev. Greyling served the Dutch Reformed Church as a pastor in the congregation of Windhoek West in Namibia.  At the same time he was working in the field of broadcasting.  When he and Liesel left Namibia to return to South Africa they both worked for Old Mutual educating people about the reality of living with HIV.  By 2001 they had discovered that using antiretrovirals consistently and correctly could mean that the risk of infecting your spouse was vastly reduced.  By November 2002 when Rev. Greyling was attending the inaugural meeting of ANERELA+ Liesel was pregnant with their first child.

Today Christo and Liesel continue to show a positive face of living with HIV.  While Rev. Greyling has now been living with HIV for more than 20 years and while he and Liesel have now been married for more than 19 years, Liesel remains HIV negative and they have two beautiful daughters, Anika and Mia, both also HIV negative.

Christo is currently working for World Vision International as Global advisor on HIV and AIDS and faith partnerships.

Other members of the newly elected Board are new Vice-Chairperson Ruth Chikasa from Zambia, Bishop Zebedee Masereka from Uganda, Pastor Vololona Randriamantena from Madagascar and Rev. Richard Oyaro from Kenya.  Ms. Joan Sutton continues to serve ANERELA+ as legal expert.  In addition to this the current regional representatives on the ANERELA+ Board are Sheikh Rashid Mallya for East Africa, Sheikh Suleiman Hassan for West Africa and Pastor Charles Mutambala for Southern Africa.
